Deadwood Dick
or, The Game of Gold
Story of the play

A dramatization of a bloodthirsty dime novel, lure of the Old West-of six gun heroes, of red-skins biting the dust, of lily-pure maidens and black-hearted gamblers, of the nerve-ending “Game of Gold”-is still with us!

It is based on one of the dime novels of Edward L. Wheeler.

Taking the most exciting situations, the more colorful characters, and the most amusing dialogue from these novels, Tom Taggart has fashioned a Gay ‘90s melodrama that has all the elements that make these blood-and-thunder melodramas of Grandma’s day so hilarious: long lost daughters, stolen goldmines, kidnapped heroines, and hairbreadth escapes abound! They are all there and so cleverly integrated into a three-act play.

Description of Characters:

Lily & Rose Blossom are the typical heroines of old-fashioned melodrama. Lily is the languishing, delicate kind of heroine and blind. The actress to play Lily should be able to sing. Rose is more sparkling and vivacious.

Ned Harris & Wild Bill Hickock are our pair of stalwart western heroes. Ned is more sedate, more noble. Bill should be played for comedy, Ned for tragedy.

Calamity Jane is the type of western tough as nails woman also personified by Mae West

Blackman Redburn is our villian, dark and black hearted….

Pong Ping -a squeeking Chinaman-PLAYED FOR SYMPATHY, NOT MENACE

Judge Nix does his best to be a dignified old law-giver but his lack of education crosses him up. Sometimes pomptuous, other times colloquial.

Molly Loveless the Sheriff’s wife, is a motherly woman approx. in her 40s

Sheriff Homer Loveless is the typical Wild West sheriff…..

Chet Pussy is our assistant “villain”-bartender and toady to Blackman Redburn

Piano Annie is one of Calamity’s bar-maids and entertainers

Teetotal Tessie is a battle-axe of a woman, with a voice like a foghorn. She leads the temperance crusade with her cohorts

Also needed:
Extras to play miners, tough guys, and some bar-maids to hang out at Calamity Jane’s Man-Trap Saloon

2 ladies to play Teetotal Tessie’s “hatcheteers”
